Step flashing consists of individual, L-shaped pieces of metal used where a sloped roof meets a vertical wall (like a chimney or dormer). Unlike a continuous strip of metal, these pieces are “stepped” up the roof, woven between each course of architectural or three-tab shingles, ensuring that water is directed on top of the shingle below it and away from the wall.

This flashing is usually fabricated from aluminum, galvanized steel, or copper. However, galvanized steel is the most common residential choice in Texas due to cost and durability. Copper is sometimes used on high-end custom homes for longevity and aesthetics.

It is critical that step flashing is not reused during a re-roofing project in Texas, as the thermal shock from intense heat cycles can weaken the metal’s integrity over time.
