Fasteners are the hardware used to mechanically attach roofing materials to the roof deck or structure. They can include nails, screws, clips, and plates. The fasteners are typically made of galvanized steel, stainless steel, or aluminum.

  • Galvanized Steel: Coated in zinc to resist rust; the standard for most asphalt shingle roofs. In Central Texas, ring-shank galvanized nails are standard to provide extra grip against the high wind uplift forces common during severe Texas thunderstorms and tornado seasons.
  • Stainless Steel: The most corrosion-resistant but more expensive; often used in coastal areas to resist salt spray.
  • Aluminum: Used specifically with aluminum roofing to prevent galvanic corrosion (a chemical reaction between dissimilar metals).

Exposed fasteners are typically sealed with caulk to prevent water leaks.
